Earlier this month, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was cancelled by Viacom. It was scheduled to be held in September in New York. The reason given was “unscheduled events”. No further details have been given. However, it does follow that the show might be postponed once again.
There is a lot of speculation as to what led to this decision. Was it due to economic reasons or scheduling problems? No one at the company was particularly happy about this decision. Victoria's Secret has a very large customer base. The show is one of their most watched fashion shows. So canceling it just doesn't make sense.
However, this cancellation is not totally unexpected. It was only too early in the show's life that rumors started swirling. Some even pointed to David Blaine, the famous street magic performer, as the possible reason. His appearance at the London Fashion Week in March 2021 was supposed to help boost interest in the show. Some even said he had an agreement with the show's producers to appear at the fashion show.
But then something happened. The fashion show cancelled the event after four years. A statement was issued saying, “After careful consideration, it has been decided to cancel the Victoria's Secret fashion show. We are extremely disappointed that, given the great response that the show receives, there are times when certain events are not successful for either the company or the models.”
This doesn't mean, however, that the fashion show will never go on. There are other factors that might lead to it getting back on track. It is fair to say that the cancellation was not the only factor. Other reasons could include financial difficulties for the company. As it is, the company now seems to be more focused on reviving its other ventures, particularly its Victoria's Secret affiliate stores.
Then again, the show cancelled because of poor promotion. This could be attributed to a new focus that has been placed on selling the product, and not just the brand name. Victoria's Secret is not a brand that sells clothes, but rather a site where women can access a catalogue of great clothes. That is not what fashion is about, so why would they put it front and center? Is the company simply trying to cash in on the success of other brands that have long since graduated to reality television?
In the end, it is probably a combination of all of the above. The cancellation of the Victoria's Secret fashion show is no real surprise. The brand is just not very popular right now, especially with younger women. For that matter, other fashion labels are not immune from the same fate. So it follows that other fashion shows and brands might soon suffer the same fate, and that would leave everybody out of pocket and without much of an audience.
It would also mean a complete end to any kind of promotion for the brand, as the only audience it would have any chance of maintaining are those that follow its lead, which is pretty tiny. The cancellation of the Victoria's Secret fashion show is therefore not entirely a bad thing. In fact, it is more of a good thing, because it will allow the company to concentrate on its other ventures.
However, just because the fashion show was cancelled does not necessarily mean the end of the road for Victoria's Secret. They could still rejuvenate it in some other way. What we are looking at here is the possibility of a revamp, where they will bring in a new line of products under the banner of the “Secrets of the World's Most Hated”, as their slogan will probably be. With a brand like Victoria's Secret, it is not impossible that they can come up with something really interesting and different for this new line.
Of course, they could just keep the name and renew the show for another season, but that would mean that they had to scramble to find models who will fit into their new clothes again, or hire a whole new collection of models to act as assistants. Either way, it will be a complete makeover, and they would then have to spend a huge amount of money on advertising it. And we all know how expensive advertising is. It costs Victoria's Secret thousands of dollars a year, just to advertise one single show, and they have a very large number of shows going on at any given time.
Is it possible that the company realised that they had made a mistake and cancelled the show? The fact is that they did cancel it, and they announced the cancellation in the most public way, by sending a press release online, and using the most famous print media in the world (The New York Times). There is no real evidence to suggest that there was ever any wrongdoing by the company. But it does show that there could always be possibilities that something might happen, and now it seems that it has happened. So, is the secret behind the Victoria's Secret fashion show cancelled now?
