When you think of the 80s, what do you see? Do you think of wild and wacky colors, super-hip styles and a love of fashion and art? If so, this is the time to enjoy those items with a bold face print or in other words, your fashion statements should be bolder than ever. If you have any doubt, let fashion designer Vera Wang explains it:
“The 80s are all about bringing things back to school,” says Vera. “We have the chic fabrics, we have the graphic prints, we have the bold colors. In some ways, fashion is taking us back to a simpler time when style and fashion were more about having fun and sharing ideas. The days of big logos and bright colors are gone, as are the days of being cool and being alone. Fashion now is more about making a statement and being fashionable.”
This current crop of fashion conscious women has finally grown up. They are no longer innocent and impressionable. Instead, they are sharpened and ready to take on the world. They know that the trends will come and they should be ready for it.
So, how should you respond to these hot trends? First, see what looks good on you and try it on. You can wear the trend and see if you like it or not. However, trends are just that; trends are temporary and will go away once they've had their season.
Instead of letting these trends fool you, however, take a deep breath and resist the urge to follow them literally. Don't just assume they'll make you look good. Instead, take what you see and use it to make something that you think is chic. While you won't be able to exactly replicate the look of the decade you are looking at, you can use the trends from that decade to add your own personal touch to the look.
For instance, if you find a dress that you love but think it's too “fussy,” you'll be able to give it a few tweaks here and there to make it work for you. If you think it's too bold, but you want to have some fun, then pick a print that you love. This way, you'll still be in keeping with the fashion yet you'll also show some of your personality. After all, you don't always have to look exactly like what you saw in your picture. Sometimes, it's good to go with a “less is more” approach.
It's also a good idea to take a moment and figure out what exactly you want to incorporate into your fashion design. While many fashion designers are pretty good at coming up with ideas, you'll find that some of the trends of the time simply are not feasible. If, however, you have an eye for fashion, you can often make changes and incorporate your favorites into your outfit without too much trouble.
So, it should be easy to pull together a fashionable ensemble with some help from the 80s Breakfast Club. Be sure to keep things simple. Don't draw attention to yourself or to the clothes you wear by going overboard. Remember, this is still in fashion, and you'll want to be happy with the result as long as it doesn't make you feel foolish.
Remember that when it comes to fashion, you are in control. Don't let someone else tell you what you should be or feel. You'll find that a lot of what you wear is up to you. Be willing to try out new styles and colors, and if something doesn't work, you're free to keep what you've got and use something else.
Have fun with what you put on. If you aren't confident in your appearance or the way you look, remember that there are plenty of other people out there with the same problems. You can talk to friends and others about your concerns. Chances are that they'll have some suggestions for you as well, and chances are that you'll also come up with your own ideas.
Take some time to find out what the fashion of the time was. Then, use that knowledge to help make your fashion choices. You'll find that if you take your time and really think about what you want, you'll end up with good decisions. That means that you'll look good and you'll feel good too!
