Deola Sagoe is a haute couture clothing designer from Ondo State, Nigeria. Born in Lagos state, she has designed clothes for women from all walks of life from her own mother tongue, Lagosian Creole, to English and African American. She graduated from Ondo State College of Art & Design in 1994. After this she travelled the world, designing clothes for major international brands such as Calvin Klein, D&G, Prada, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. Her own designs have been sold around the world by numerous companies, but her most famous creations remain in the exclusive boutiques of Europe and North America.
Most European and North American fashion houses now stock Deola Sagoe's products. She has also designed clothing for some of Africa's leading fashion designers. As one of few female designers of African descent, deola sagoe has achieved a level of success that many other designers of color and ethnicity have failed to achieve. In addition to her clothing line, Della Sagoe has launched her own line of perfume, cosmetics, accessories and fragrances. With her clothing line and fragrances she has established a name for herself in the fashion world as a contemporary stylist, whose work is sold around the world.
After graduating in Cairo and pursuing her education in England, della Sagoe returned to Africa to pursue her academic career. While in London she began to study the art of weaving African fabrics, influenced by the style of Mebra weaving that was popular at the time. In this field of studies she learned the importance of using color in her designs, and how to blend color and textiles in innovative ways to create unique and individual styles.
After completing a Masters degree in textile design at the University of Ghana in Abia state in England, della Sagno decided to establish her own line of African haute couture. This was a risky move, given the state of Nigeria's poor economy and the predominance of highly commercialized styles. However, in 1998 she launched her line of Nigerian fashion house ade-ojo, with the slogan “One dress gives you the freedom to express yourself”. The name was inspired by the expression “abe-u-o-jeye” which loosely translates as “free spirit”.
Today, with Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and the largest economy in the country, it was only natural for Della Sagoe to launch her line of African-inspired clothing and accessories, which she named after the city where she had gained her knowledge and experience in textile design. She believes that the success of ade-ojo in England and now the popularity of Lagos, Nigeria's biggest city, is testament to the ability of the afro-centric African fashion industry to take African ideas and make them mainstream in the Western fashion industry. In fact, many feel that Ade-Ojo is the true pioneer of the hip hop clothing look, which has now reached worldwide levels, thanks largely to the efforts of Deola Sagoe and other like-minded African designers.
Although Lagos may not be able to rival London or New York as the fashion capital of the world, it does have its own share of talented designers. The city is home to many celebrities who dabble in the world of fashion and show off their unique style through ad campaigns on television. As a result, many people from all over the world want to be associated with these popular stars. They wear ade-ojo clothing to project the hip hop look, which is heavily influenced by Africa's history and culture. Whether it is Lagos or any other African city that we may see on TV or in the newspapers, we can be sure that there will be more della Sagno haute couture Fashion House brands popping up in the near future, given the success of ade-ojo and similar outfits.
