The fashions of the 1960s are often remembered by a generation that considers the decade the “hottest” in world history. Popular styles included hip-hop and rockabilly, as well as jazz, folk and the arts and crafts. Today, these same trends are still popular, although there is a new style that has emerged: the 60's vintage clothing style.
The fashions of the 1960s were known for their outlandish designs, bright colors and unkempt hair, which made them extremely appealing. They also took the United States by storm and were seen everywhere, from fashionable prom dresses to everyday casual clothing. Although they appeared for only a few years, fashions from this era have become classics that look timeless. You can dress up an old sweater with a chic top or dress up a baby doll with a baggy tee and jeans. Vintage fashion designers continue to work on new lines and are constantly coming up with new fashions that take the concept of the past and make it contemporary.
It was the “beachbum” generation that made the 1960s fashionable, as they were always looking to head to the beach and play on the surf and sun. Beachwear fashions during this time represented the casual beachgoer and included such iconic pieces as neon t-shirts, bright shorts, flip-flops, and sandals. This was a generation that was interested in fun, youthful clothes, and those fashions began to change as the culture matured. Formal wear became more elegant, while beachwear dropped the tie and became more relaxed. These fashions became popular again during the late sixties, as the “Hippie Generation” emerged, bringing together people who were interested in a more peaceful, natural lifestyle.
Another significant trend was the rise in interest in jazz, as the “jazz age” brought a renewed interest in music and dancing. Dancers wore large, bright clothes, along with intricate jewelry and clothing. They often wore their hair straight down, or had it completely swept away. It was a very cheerful look, indicative of the times. Hippies fashions took center stage, especially when groups like the Rolling Stones and the Doors were coming to town. Many of these fashions have remained popular through the years, even if the hippie generation has become well known for its paranoia and anti-intellectualism.
The 1970s witnessed many changes in the fashions of both men and women. Ladies started to dress more informally, in ways that were very akin to the earlier fashions. Younger men dressed similarly to their female counterparts. Sportswear and other sporty clothes became very popular, as did jeans. Many other fashions were also introduced during this decade, including jewelry pieces that were bolder and more colorful than before.
While many fashions experienced a decline, some saw growth. “I'm not sure what caused this,” commented one fifties fashionista. “Lifestyle trends tend to follow current ones, as people get more comfortable. I think the popularity of hippies and psychedelic bands helped keep many of these styles alive for a while.”
