The anachronistic appeal of an old-fashioned line is not easily undermined. When people think of pole clothes lines, images of dusty hangers filled with ironed shirts, mismatched trousers and skirts come to mind. However, the history of the hanger has changed significantly since its inception. Today, hangers serve a much more functional purpose, supporting garments in upright position and adding a fashionable, edgy look to any wardrobe.
As technology improved and the industry grew, so has the size and importance of the line. In the past, clothes lines were often found in factories. Manufacturers depended on local labour and a lower cost of living to keep their factories operating. Industrialization meant that production shifted to bigger towns and, as the population grew, so did the need for skilled labour. This allowed manufacturers to pay better wages and provide better working conditions, which allowed the industry to flourish. As this happened, the popularity of pole harnessing became widespread and it began to be seen as a necessary industrial tool.
A clothes line pole can be a simple piece of wood or it can be covered with fabric to protect it from the elements. The choice of material is up to the user. The poles can also be constructed out of wrought iron to match the era of the hangers and fabric to which they are attached.
Today, pole hangers are still used by many women's clothes stores. In fact, some of them have taken up the practice of storing the line in the backyard to protect it from weather damage. If you have a modern style clothes line, this is a perfectly logical step. However, many people opt for the traditional style which is kept in open areas of the garden or near the door. If you want to keep your clothes line in the same place, you will probably need a stand as opposed to a storage box.
These days, many fashionable shops have their own personalised poles for the line. In these cases, it is advisable to get a pole with the name of the shop or brand on it. This allows people to recognise the hanger when they see it for the first time. It is also possible to personalise poles by having their names embroidered into them.
Another advantage of having an old fashioned clothes line is that it can be customised to suit your particular needs. For instance, you might like to have it customised to take the measurements of your clothes line. If so, it would not be difficult to buy a pole with the right dimensions. You could also choose whether you want your clothes line to fold over on itself or whether you would prefer them to be immobile. This is something that you will have to decide on yourself.
