Before I begin, I should probably tell you that this is not about fashion. This is about disco fashion for men, and the impact it had on my generation. That said, let's get to it! In the early to mid 70s, fashion for men of any age was usually very simple and unexciting. Black, grey, and brown, as they were all the same. It wasn't until the end of the decade that we saw truly wild and different styles emerge, and I'm sure we'll be seeing more in the years to come.
Now, you may be thinking that I'm going to tell you about the wild looks of the seventies, but I assure you, they aren't in this article. What I want to do, however, is provide you with the insight of why these particular looks on men of that era were so important. As it turns out, there were actually three reasons for the wild fashion choices of that decade. They included the need for bold colors (which are synonymous with disco fashions today), a need for edgier clothing, and men wanting to look and feel better than they had in the past.
One of the most important things that jumped out at me as I watched those old videos was the color choice that was being made. At the time, black was still the chosen color of those in the know. Black was known for being sexy, classy, and powerful, and it was also the color that everyone wanted to “transgress.” If you were daring enough to step out of the norm, chances were good that you were also courageous enough to stand out from the crowd. And who can blame those people for wanting to “break the mold”?
After that edgier look emerged, disco fashion for men continued to change and evolve. What I'm talking about is the fact that we saw bold patterns, prints, and vivid colors mixed together. Black was no longer the only option; it was now followed by bright red, neon blues, and even yellow. In fact, these brighter colors were probably the reason that black became so “sexy” in the first place!
As the decade wore on, we also saw an increase in accessories for men. Shoes, belts, hats, and bags got bigger and better looking. We also saw men's designer jeans, which were also big during this time. Men were no longer seen as “the guys,” they were now seen as “the guys with the drive.” And the drive was evident!
Men also want to look rugged. There was always a sub-culture of fashion for men that was about looking rugged, and this trend didn't fade. Remember, this was a time when there was still a sexual stigma attached to wearing a tie, even for the white collar type. Ties were meant to be non-mainstream and not something that was encouraged among professionals. But, with the advent of hippie fashion and the freedom for expression that came with it, ties came back into style, and they were no longer seen as something strictly conservative.
It was also during this decade that we also saw the rise of the designer name label. A lot of companies were coming out with their own lines, and men wanted to be included. Companies were beginning to realize that they could get a lot more mileage out of a name brand product if it was created by an actual person, not just a large company or clothing line. A lot of this came from the fact that many celebrities were also starting their own lines, and the public wanted to wear those brands as well.
The disco era also saw the rise of skinny jeans. Men of all shapes and sizes were wearing these, and they were doing it to play up their masculine form. Men of all styles and sizes are not afraid to wear these types of jeans today, so go ahead and rock a pair on. They make great fashion statements, and you would be hard-pressed to find a man who wouldn't love to sport a pair today.
