Fashion and design is the discipline of using design, aesthetics, construction, and natural attractiveness of objects and their accessories to convey a message. It is highly influenced by social and cultural attitudes and has variously evolved over time and location. Some common areas of study for fashion and design majors at either a local college or university are printmaking, merchandising, accessory design, interior architecture, fashion and cosmetics, and technical writing. These are just a few of the many subjects covered at a major university or college. Other majors may include psychology, communication, fine arts, computer science, and business administration. Many other fields exist, covering a variety of academic majors. Students can choose to major in almost any area of the field that interests them. Fashion and design careers can be broken down into four different categories. There are high-end, low-end, upper-class/lower-middle class, and entry-level positions. High-end positions include professional designers and stylists, costume designer/developer, commercial stylist/stylist, hairdresser/contractor, fashion assistant/standardmaker, and director/set designer. A student may also specialize in one of these four areas for a specific fashion industry certification or licensing program.
One of the most popular fashion design careers is fashion merchandising, which involves the retail, wholesale, and retail distribution of fashion and cosmetic products. In this field, one earns by buying the products at the lowest possible price from manufacturers and distributors, then selling them to retailers who carry the products in their stores. For example, a fashion merchandiser could buy from a manufacturer the complete make up kit for a woman's new line of evening wear; then she would sell the kit to her local retailers for a profit.
An associate degree in fashion marketing provides one with the technical know-how to become a designer. The degree requires not only a background in basic fashion design but also math, business, accounting, marketing, and sociology. The associate degree programs require that students complete a minimum of five years of coursework at a community college or trade school. The average salary for an associate degree is $25,000 per year. The median salary for a two-year degree is about $30,000.
A number of designers choose to work for fashion companies instead of starting their own fashion boutique. Most large fashion companies employ young designers to work in their stores as interns or apprentice for two or three years. The internships usually last from a few weeks to a few months, during which the trainees are exposed to the company's design studios and learn about the different areas of fashion. When the trainee graduates, she can apply to become one of their permanent employees, which increases her earning potential and her chances for career advancement.
