Japanese street fashion is becoming more popular all over the world. In places such as Tokyo, Los Angeles, and New York fashion has become a staple of local culture. Fashion Goths, tattoo wearers, and other “rave” types are flocking to these new styles, which are influenced more by Japanese culture than any other culture on the planet. This rise in interest in the Japanese street fashion scene is no accident. The roots of this new style can be traced back to the 1980's when Japanese pop bands began wearing many of the same clothing and accessories as many of their European counterparts.
Today's styles are influenced more by street culture than they are by traditional Japan. As a result, you will find many Japans in these styles. This combination of different influences results in a very unique look that combines the best of both worlds. Many of these garments are short, spiky-haired, and incorporate street tricks like tie-dye. On the other hand, the roots of these styles are far more ancient than you might imagine.
Historically, Japanese clothing styles have been very conservative, staying away from bold patterns and colors. However, with the growing popularity of these “rave” fashions and the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from Asian countries, these Japanese street fashion styles have begun to absorb many of the traits of the European style. Many of the clothing styles in these cities are modeled after the European fashion, but with a more punk attitude.
One of the most popular aspects of Japanese street fashion is the use of kimono cloth. These cloths are traditionally worn only in formal occasions. However, due to the rapid growth of the Japanese communities in other parts of the world, the use of these cloths is now commonplace. Even many of the individuals who would not normally consider wearing a kimono now do so because it is more in keeping with their personal style.
The designs of modern Japanese clothing are no less bold than those worn in the west. Traditionally, the Japanese have always had great respect for art and sculpture. In fact, many of the kimono styles originate from western countries like those in America or those in Europe. The artistry involved in making a traditional kimono adds to the uniqueness of each piece. As a result, many pieces become collector's items, as well as works of fine art. Some styles have become so common that they have even reached the level of acceptance among the Japanese themselves.
In today's world, Japanese street fashion continues to grow at a rapid pace. As of this writing, there are over 60 different types of kimonos available. These include the traditional two-piece suit, which is common in business clothing. There are kimonos with sleeves, skirts and even blouses. While westerners may scoff at the notion of kimonos being worn in the streets, it is true that this is the case. As this part of Japan continues to grow and become more popular, you will see more people sporting these once “kimono-like” garments.
