8 Secrets About 8s Heavy Metal Fashion That Has Never Been Revealed For The Past 8 Years | 8s heavy metal fashion

When we look back at the 80s, the fashion industry was definitely focused on heavy metal. This can be traced back to the rise of such groups as Black Sabbath and Motley Crue. The groups were so popular that their influence spanned not only the music they released but even the clothes they wore. As the group became more successful, so did the styles that they introduced. From boots to pants, from jackets to shirts, there was definitely a heavy metal element to everything they did.

Even so, with the rise of punk and thrash metal, the styles that were popularized during those years fizzled out. Instead of the outlandish costumes and hair metal makeup that were once in vogue, it was all about stripped down, simple style that emphasized the rugged individualism of the punk sub-culture. One look at any image of a punk at any point in time will show you exactly what I'm talking about. So, while the 80s witnessed a new movement in the fashion industry, it didn't really carry over into the realm of heavy metal fashion.

The 1980s witnessed an entirely new fashion trend. It wasn't about the band's image anymore. Instead, it was about the band itself. Taking elements from punk and thrash and keeping them classic, yet trendy, the “Goth” look is one that has been popular ever since. Bands such as Kiss and Metallica incorporated this style into their image for much the same reason.

While the goth look continues to evolve, this particular style is certainly here to stay. A lot of metal fans feel like they either don't fit in or they wouldn't fit in if they did. The reason for this is largely misunderstood. By making light of their image, the fans are actually helping to keep metal alive and well, while at the same time, making a statement that says, “this is who we are.”

While that is true, that statement still sounds like self-important mumbo jumbo. To anyone outside, looking in on the scene, the difference between punk fashion and heavy metal fashion may just seem like another band trying to set the fashion trend. In reality, it's not. Instead, it's the difference between trying to stay relevant while creating a unique image for themselves. If bands want to stay relevant, they need to create a distinct sound that's all their own.

That is the key to any successful metal band's success: making themselves stand out, while staying true to their image. The problem with modern fashion trends is that they often get in the way. Instead of being able to identify something unique and separate themselves from the crowd, people simply follow the crowd. This means that unless a band can get their unique sound and image out there, they're doomed to stay in the same boring boat.

In order to avoid that problem, a band has to be able to stand out in a sea of generic fashion. After all, most of the clothes you see all have a recognizable look, whether they're from Back to the Future, Viva La Vida or some other decade. You may not know why those designs look so appealing, but at least you know they're not “that” design.

The problem with this is that many times, bands that come from a more retro style of music have become too reliant on that look. They begin to use it as a crutch, when it should actually be used as a stepping stone to create a unique image for themselves. Once they're able to do that, they can go back to creating music that sounds nothing like what they used to, because now that's what's trendy. When you combine that with wearing a shirt that has an 80s heavy metal guitar on it, suddenly you have something that everyone will be talking about at every concert.
