The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, often abbreviated as the “FIDM,” is a private, not for profit academic institution with multiple branches in California. It offers various degree programs in a variety of majors including fashion, hair styling, fashion & accessories, kitchen design & preparation, men's fashion & accessories, creative writing, fashion merchandising, and technical designing. Students can complete their formal education at either the associate's or bachelor's degree level. A few of the classes offered are specifically designed to prepare students for internship or job placements after graduation. More advanced degrees are available through the master's degree program.

The Bachelor's program provides students with the basic knowledge of the theories of fashion and design, with an emphasis on clothing, accessory, and fashion merchandising. Specializations include men's wear, women's wear, children's wear, accessory, swimwear, and casual wear. Specializations in fashion merchandising include toy and costume design, women's athletic apparel, jewelry, handbags, accessory boutiques, and fashion technology. There are also programs available in communications, fashion marketing, fashion consulting, event planning, and event management.

Students pursuing a Bachelors degree in fashion merchandising enroll in classes that focus on the broad topics of women's and men's fashion and accessories, as well as broad areas of specialized fashion merchandising such as wedding gowns, corporate attire, and fashion photography. Some classes, such as those focusing on creative sewing, fine tailoring, fashion design, and color coordination, are also offered by the school. Students choose either two or four minors to specialize in. An associate's degree is usually sufficient for entry-level positions; however, some positions require an associate's with a bachelor's degree. A four-year degree is required for positions that require more specialized training.

A Bachelor's degree is required for positions that involve retail, design, or fashion merchandising. The Bachelor's program covers general studies, which includes the history and principles of fashion; psychology and human behavior; fashion development; business studies; design theory and application, technical aspects of fashion merchandising, teaching methods and concepts, and management, information systems, computer applications, and communication skills. The Bachelor's degree requires about one year of full-time study at the institute. Students complete their courses in different areas and are awarded grades based on their assignments.

A Master's degree is awarded after a one-year program of about three years at the fashion institute. The curriculum at the Master's degree program is specialized, with a focus on developing an understanding of the history and principles of fashion merchandising, development, and design. Further, students learn about the working environment and learn how to assess and improve the quality of a company's fashion merchandising. They may specialize in one particular area such as women's wear or men's fashion.

Students can earn either a Bachelors or a Masters degree in fashion. Both programs offer specialized training in the areas of business, accounting, marketing, computer science, and fashion development. The Bachelor's program focuses on both general education courses and specific courses specific to the field of fashion. The Master's program is focused on more specific areas of fashion, including creative areas such as women's, children's, and accessories fashion. It is also quite competitive, with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.3.
