When you think about the decade that defined modern fashion, you may think of dresses, shoes, and jewelry. While these are definitely important elements, the decade also gave birth to many “80's attire” that is still popular today. The first thing you might notice when looking back on the decade is that it was filled with bold, colorful styles. These fashions were very popular among groups that were just beginning to find their voice. “Cookie-cutter” looks were all the rage, and often made it difficult for less experienced designers to come up with interesting and different looks.
As time went by, the fashion world became more sophisticated, making it possible for people to wear more complicated clothing. In addition, more sophisticated fashion started to incorporate more formal designs. This trend marked a big change from the Bohemian or free style designs that had previously characterized the clothing of the decade. As a result, clothing designers found it increasingly difficult to come up with stylish looks that were in line with this new look. Instead, the styles became more “business-like.”
A trend that did not gain popularity until the eighties, but which has been popular since the nineteen eighties, is that of brightly colored clothing. These days, bright colors are often associated with rock and roll or other non-ironical styles. However, during the nineteen eighties, they became popular with people looking to make a statement. Bright colors such as orange, lime green, and yellow were used in many fashions.
Another popular type of fashion for the decade was skirts and mini skirts. These skirts, which were originally worn by women going to the gym or for informal get-togethers, have remained popular even as more formal clothing choices have become more common. Shorts, halter tops, and capris are all styles that can be found in fashion magazines from this era. One reason for this popularity is that this was the first year that jeans were introduced to the mainstream fashion scene.
One of the biggest trends in clothing from this year is the outfit called the “suit,” also known as the “hoodie.” This ensemble consists of a jacket, denim shirt, beanie hat, and sneakers. The suit has evolved into two distinct looks: the casual, laid back look, and the rocker, grunge look. (Rockers often wear accessories such as brightly colored bracelets, jewelry, and sunglasses). Most of the suits were sported by members of the British rock band Queen.
Some of the other popular fashion choices from this year include casual dresses, skirts, and jackets. These choices were most commonly worn by women who wore their hair short. Shorter styles made their debut in fashion during the decade, and the punk/rock look made its first appearance. All of these trends will be present at this years' New Fashion Week in London.
