Do black gay fashion designers speak for the entire gay community? As a gay male, I often get questions such as, “Do you wear black because it's black? Do you like black so much that you can't get rid of it?” My response to these questions is always the same: “I wear black because it's black.”
The diversity in style, fashion and form comes from the many black gay fashion designers out there. Gay fashion is just as “in” today as straight fashion is. I believe that more men are beginning to understand that they don't have to conform to societal ideas about what a man should look like. While there may still be those who are put off by being called gay, society is gradually understanding that gay men can also be elegant, suave, and sophisticated. I believe the evolution of fashion is partially to do with people liking change, and part of becoming equal in every way.
Why don't more gay men consider wearing black? It's probably a reflection of how gay men are viewed by society. Society still thinks of gay men as being effeminate, and therefore most choose to wear jeans, tees and other conservative clothing. If society didn't think gay men were masculine, they would never dress the way they do.
Why does dress for fashion mean black? I guess it's because black is seen as a safe option by most when it comes to men's fashion. Most think it's a good choice because black isn't gender defined. The color black doesn't say “man” or “woman”, it says “dagger”. In fact, I think black men have a tough time wearing most clothing because of preconceived notions. Black is a simple color, so it is easy to copy and incorporate into clothing.
Black gay fashion designers are paving the way for gay acceptance in our society. By choosing black, they are making a statement that we are equal in every way. It makes us stand out in a sea of sexuality. Most clothing is pretty limited in terms of color, so we can certainly add something different. Not only will people start to notice us, but we will be a source of inspiration for many other gay fashion designers out there. We can help them pave the way for success.
If you want to get into fashion, you should definitely look into black clothes. Not only will they look stylish and fashionable, but they are very comfortable and easy to afford. Once again, black is seen as a masculine color, so it's a great choice if you want to express your masculinity in a unique way. Look for black designers who are making unique statements with their clothes.
