When it comes to shopping, it seems that you can choose from any French brand at just about any price. However, do any of them live up to their hype or does the price come with more than you bargained for? It is not uncommon for shoppers to pay retail prices for designer labels and then be put off by the quality. Is it possible that they have been taken advantage of? It may be, but with a little investigation, you should be able to find a better deal.
First of all, it helps to understand that there are different types of French clothes brands, and each has its own place in the market. The most famous ones are those by the well-known designers Christian Dior and couture fashion house L'Oreal. The first thing you will notice when you visit a major department store is that it sells a large selection of French brands such as Dior's Confitde, Louis Vuitton's Donne, and frocks by Gucci. These labels command prices of over a thousand dollars, and many shoppers feel that they get a deal from paying so much. This is not entirely true, however. While these clothes can look beautiful, they are also very expensive, and it is important to remember that quality doesn't always equal price.
Next, we take a look at the more common mall shopping areas where shoppers tend to buy cheaper French fashions. In addition to the large department stores, there are discount malls such as Marshalls and JC Penney that sell a variety of clothing from top designers at lower prices. If you have to travel a long way to find some of your favorite labels, it might not be worth the extra money. There is no reason to pay top dollar to buy clothes at a popular label when you can find the same items in a department store for half the price. This is why it is important to keep an eye on the sales, and shop out of the best shopping area when possible.
Another problem may lie in the shopping mall itself. Sometimes, a mall may put up a sign or two advertising a French designer brand when it could just as easily be another popular name. The problem here lies in the fact that shoppers are used to seeing their favorite designer at every outlet and are unaware of other places that offer discount prices. A good rule of thumb is to only shop at places that are within a three mile radius of your home, and check the location of the store regularly to see if there are complaints about poor customer service or excessive merchandise display.
One final problem lies with the buyers themselves. Many people who live in countries where French is not the national language do not realize that their fashions are pretty poor when compared to what they see in their own country. When they move to a US shopping area and enter through the front door, they immediately recognize designer labels. While many of these stores still sell quality clothing at low prices, they may be very large stores that carry a much broader selection. It's important to always investigate where you buy your clothes, especially if you intend to stay in the US for a long period of time.
Whether or not you buy your clothing from an actual location in Paris or New York City, it's important that you shop around. Sometimes, local retailers are more interested in building their reputation and expanding their customer base than they are in selling you the latest designer fashions. If the price is right, shop around!
